Today, we have a good understanding as human’s what’s good and what’s bad for our bodies. We know that having an addiction is extremely harmful to the body and brain. The consumption of alcohol on a regular basis or abusing drugs that lead to overdosing and dying, is deadly. Someone who is an addict or a recovering addict, knows that quitting cold turkey is simply not an option at times. Seeking professional help and having a strong support system is typically how one can beat an addiction. Staying active and maintaining a regular routine is key for someone in recovery. Let’s look at 5 tips to help with staying sober. The following are suggestions that we recommend and are not meant for everyone.
Staying Sober with the Help of These 5 Tips
- Connect with your family regularly
Having a support system that is by your side through hard times and happy times, is often something many people take for granted. If you do or can spend more time with your family, then I suggest you keep this healthy habit going. Spending time and being around family members regularly can keep your spirits up. Being connected and forming bonds with different family members can help you with staying sober, as it holds you accountable to keep these relationships by checking in frequently.
- Form a bond with someone else in recovery
Allowing yourself to form a friendship with someone else going through the same journey as you can be comforting. Sitting down, talking and chatting regularly can be a healthy habit for you to maintain. Chatting over a cup of coffee, or hitting the gym together can be satisfying. It will keep you busy and allow yourself to stay interactive with someone who has the same goals for staying sober. Checking in frequently with one another, can make you feel a sense of accountability that someone else is relying on you or vice-versa.
- Get outdoors
Staying active and getting fresh air is one of the best tips anyone can provide to someone. You will hear a common theme amongst recovering addicts, that they have started to do more activities outside, such as; yoga, hiking, walking, swimming, running etc. This is a great way for someone who is staying sober to include cardio and maintain a healthy heart and physique. A little sunshine and great company can improve your overall well-being.
- Join a club/organization/membership
Being a part of something like a club or organization can make someone feel important and needed. Regularly meeting at specific times and days can allow a recovering addict to hold a steady routine and balance throughout their weeks. Knowing that someone in this organization or group is relying on you to be present, can support your habit with staying sober.
- Maintain a steady healthy diet
Keeping yourself healthy from the inside out, not only will improve your appearance but it also will improve your mind and soul. Knowing that you are feeding your body with fruits, veggies, whole grains, fish, meat, seeds/nuts, water etc. can improve you mentally, physically and emotionally. Staying sober can be a whole lot easier when you start to focus on a steady diet and healthy eating habit. It changes your brain and trains yourself to only nourish healthy things. Eliminating fast food, and the thought of drinking alcohol or the use of illegal drugs will not be a thought anymore once you maintain these habits of a healthy lifestyle.
