It is important for anyone to be good to themselves in life to be happy. Whether drug addict or not, it is human nature to want to be happy. If we go around regretting everything we have done, and wishing we could change our lives, we waste good time.
For the alcoholic and addict, it becomes imperative to be good to yourself in sobriety. One reason for doing so is that it can help your life feel more fulfilling. If you put good things into your life, you generally get good things back. If you constantly go around with a cloud of negativity above your head, people are going to be repelled. They won’t want to associate with you, and you’re going to feel alone. That type of mindset and attitude will eventually make drinking or drug use seem like a great idea again, even though your history with abuse plainly shows it isn’t.
On the other hand, if you do good things, you’ll feel better, and you’ll attract people. If you take the time to treat yourself, and to check your attitude throughout each day, the dividends it pays will be enormous.

This can keep you from being too irritable throughout the day, and provide a foundation for a return to normal living.
Another way to be good to yourself in sobriety is to start taking care of your hygiene. This can be true for males or females. Things like regular haircuts, new clothes, and teeth cleaning/brushing can go a long way to improving self-esteem. All of these are things that many substance abusers neglect.
A third tip for being good to yourself in sobriety is to plan and do activities you enjoy. If you are just getting sober, you may not know what they are. In that case, make an effort to discover what you like or don’t. At least it will be an adventure as you do it. Life isn’t meant to be all work and no play. So devote a little time (but not too much) to having fun. Whatever you choose doesn’t even have to be expensive. There are many free things to do that are just as fun as expensive concerts or ballgames.
