Marijuana News: according to The Obama administration, marijuana is not a safe and effective medicine. At least, that is what DEA chief Chuck Rosenberg said. He used that line of logic to deny a bid to reclassify marijuana under adapted, federal drug guidelines.
Marijuana is currently a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act. This puts it in the same category as deadly heroin. Heroin, which we all know, is now costing society billions of dollars a year, and claiming thousands of lives. LSD, a potent hallucinogen, is also a Schedule I drug.
Oxycodone, methamphetamine, and some other substances are regulated as Schedule II controlled substances.
Current federal classifications relegate marijuana as the most restricted type of drug, at least in the eyes of the law. Many Americans see no reason for this. It is easy to understand why: when the harmful effects of marijuana are compared to drugs like heroin, there is really no comparison at all. When viewed in this light, the tight DEA restrictions seem outright stupid. The failure to reclassify marijuana is even more absurd when 42 states already allow some medical marijuana use. Colorado has legalized the drug for over a year. They’ve leveraged it into a multi-billion dollar industry. By doing so, they have cut into illegal drug cartel profits, too.

According to NPR, Drug Enforcement Administration chief Chuck Rosenberg claimed that their decision was rooted upon science. He concluded that marijuana has “no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States.” He also said it remains highly vulnerable to abuse. It was dubbed the most commonly used illicit drug across the nation. “This decision isn’t based on danger. This decision is based on whether marijuana, as determined by the FDA, is a safe and effective medicine,” he said, “and it’s not.”
Tom Angell, chairman of Marijuana Majority, said he was disappointed with the DEA’s choice. “President Obama always said he would let science, and not ideology, dictate policy. In this case, his administration is upholding a failed drug war approach,” he wrote (NPR). He also stated the Obama Administration needed to instead look at “real, existing evidence that marijuana has medical value.”
Marijuana News: The Obama Administration has failed to look at science.
It remains clear that President Obama and Chuck Rosenberg are so out of touch with reality, and with the whims of the American people, that they have continued to uphold policies that make no sense at all. Given the current opioid crisis and the problems associated with it, the legalization and reclassification of marijuana could provide a needed boost to tax revenue across the country. It would also be a major step to ended the failed “War on Drugs” which has allowed cartels to flourish while stocking the US Prison system to overflowing. Even more illogical, is the way President Obama has been commuting the sentences of hundreds of prisoners in one step (many of whom were convicted on minor drug charges), but making marijuana illegal with another.
So, how can marijuana be reclassified going forward? There are two options. The first is to have the DEA and the FDA, and other agencies, sign off saying it is an acceptable medicinal drug. The second is Congress to pass a law, and for the president to sign it.
It doesn’t look like either will be happening at this time. Marijuana will have to wait to become legalized on the federal level.
