Nicole Kidman, who won an Academy Award in 2002 for Best Actress, is sharing what she’s learned about her husband, Keith Urban, “as the wife of somebody who’s been through” a struggle with addiction, according to People.
Kidman, who has also famously starred in movies like Moulin Rouge!, Cold Mountain, and Rabbit Hole, has spent more than a decade of supporting her husband, Keith Urban, as he works on his sobriety.
Keith Urban’s Addiction – Kidman’s Views
One thing that Kidman mentioned to People’s Editorial Director, Jess Cagle, was that she thought it was best for loved-ones of those with an addiction, as well as the addicted individual’s themselves, “to get help. To put your hand up, to reach out. There is absolutely help out there. You can’t save somebody, they’ve got to save themselves.” She went on to say that, “It’s a very big thing for people like me who go, ‘I can take care of you. I can do it.”
This is a common theme for wives and spouses of addicts or alcoholics. Naturally, they want to help the person they love. They may go to incredible lengths to try to do so, and they may try to carry this burden all alone. Often, they don’t want outsiders to know of some problems that may be going on in their personal lives. With this in mind, a spouse may do all they can, however, many times professional help is necessary. Very few addicts ever recover on their own.
Kidman also realized this at some time in their marital struggles. Regarding her marriage with Keith Urban, she said, “At some point, you just have to say, ‘I love you and I’m here when you decide to do the work. If you don’t, then that’s it.”
The acclaimed actress has stood by her husband’s side throughout this journey. She said, “It’s not easy, but there’s an extraordinary life if you do get there through help.” The couple recently celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary.
Keith Urban and his Addiction
According to Billboard, Urban has spoken about his battle with addiction early in his career. Like most actors, he went through early struggles. He was an Australian star who was attempting to make it in Nashville. He made the choice to check into a famous rehab facility in Palm Springs for an alcohol issue in 2007, just months before he married Kidman.
“Nicole listened to her heart and did what she felt was the right thing to do,” Keith Urban told PEOPLE in 2007. He added, “To see that kind of love in action, that’s very moving and deeply inspiring and just makes me want to be a better man.”
At the opening of his Country Music Hall of Fame exhibit, Urban said, “I caused the implosion of my fresh marriage. It survived, but it’s a miracle it did. I was spiritually awoken with her. I use the expression ‘I was born into her,’ and that’s how I feel. And for the first time in my life, I could shake off the shackles of addiction.”
Urban is among a short list of celebrities to achieve long-term sobriety. Other notable actors who have gotten sober include Robert Downey Jr. and Bradley Cooper.
